Doctor Duran (actor Milo O’Shea), the evil character in the cult film "Barbarella" returns to earth, crash-landing his time machine directly underneath the giant stadium in Oakland, California. He is bent upon doing battle with the five imposters above him (the band) who have stolen his name. The evil doctor sends out his henchmen to destroy them as they perform to a packed stadium. DURAN DURAN continue to perform throughout, as chaos ensues around them.
DURAN DURAN are captured at their musical best in "Arena" by award winning director, Russell Mulcahy, who honed his skills working on music promos throughout the 80s, directing Duran videos "Planet Earth", "Hungry Like The Wolf", "Rio", "Save a Prayer", "The Reflex" and "Wild Boys" amongst others. He then moved into full length feature films and had success with "Highlander" I and II and "Tale of the Mummy". He has recently moved into TV, directing the US version of the UK TV series "Queer as Folk".
"The Making of Arena" documentary prises open the lid on the creative processes involved with making "Arena". It reveals how each member of the group contributed ideas and how after two years work and a million pound budget a fantastic sci-fi film was created through the fusion of extraordinary sets, stunning costumes, original dance sequences and visual effects. It also helps to explain director Russell Mulcahy's motto "If I can imagine it, then I can film it".
