Atanga Boom was founded in 2012 by six musicians with a common passion for groove, powerjazz and worldmusic. Before that, the individual members built their stage experience performing alongside Jose James, Joseph Bowie, Caro Emerald, Monsieur Dubois, Bernies Lounge and The Shuffle Demons. This new group immediately caught the attention of the Dutch scene, being welcomed by such venues as the Paradiso, the North Sea Jazz Club and Jazz in Duketown. The sound of Atanga Boom is defined by the presence of the tuba and the baritone saxophone. Two wind instruments covering the lowest register, battling the forces of drums and percussion, with sparkling effects from the guitar and keys, supplying everything with both raw and sophisticated sounds. In between all the instrumental violence, vocal intermissions are served by percussion player and singer Helene Jank. All Atanga Boom bandmembers contribute to the material as composer. Some of them also write music in the field of theatre, dance and film, scoring for The Scapino Ballet, The Hitchcock 9 project produced by the EYE institute or the short movie Ciel screened at the Cannes filmfestival.
